We are not certain of the exact date when this District Lodge was formed but there was certainly an Orange presence in this part of the North East from the mid 1850's as there are local newspaper accounts of an affray on July 12th 1857 at a place called Felling near Gateshead. Here a group of Roman Catholic Ribbonmen attacked a parade of Orangemen, a number of persons were badly injured some of the Ribbonmen were arrested for Violent assault and jailed in Durham.
