LOL 358 Crossgar Cumberland True Blues
The event has passed.
One of the most significant events in the history of Crossgar will be marked for the first time ever next month.
The local Orange Lodge whose forebears fought in the battle, will hold an anniversary parade around the village to mark one of the most significant events in the history of Orangeism and parading in 19th century Ulster.
The parade by Crossgar Cumberland True Blue LOL 358 will take place on Friday 22nd March, assembling at the Orange Hall from 6:30pm. It will be led by Schomberg Fife and Drum from Kilkeel whose traditional style echoes the historic occasion.
The parade will begin at Crossgar Orange Hall at the top of Killyleagh Street, go around the Market Square, then via the roundabout where a wreath will be laid at the spot where two deaths were recorded, before returning to the Orange Hall where Callum Bowsie will give a short history about the battle.
The Battle of Crossgar – also known as the Defence of Crossgar – took place on 17th March 1849 when over 3,000 Ribbonmen from south Down descended into Crossgar. The defence of Killyleagh Street by the local Orangemen resulted in a deadly riot. Within a year, all parades in Ireland were banned, but not before a retaliatory battle at Dolly’s Brae later that summer.
